Milwaukee, WI: The City of Milwaukee Street Sign Committee will discuss the approval of an Honorary Street Sign in the name of Dr. Gloria Gilmer on Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. CDT at the Milwaukee City Hall, Room 301-A.
The street sign application is being sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter.
Dr. Gloria Gilmer was the first black woman mathematician to have her research papers on display at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. She was also the first black woman to earn a PhD from the School of Education at Marquette University.
Her proudest accomplishment was being the first black math instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), where she taught for 14 years. Helping minority students succeed in math was the topic of her research in Ethnomathematics, which is now on display at the Library of Congress.
On May 30, 2024, the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee will discuss the issuance of an honorary street sign to be placed near 6th Street & Highland Avenue on the MATC campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The street sign will be a permanent symbol of Dr. Gilmer's contributions to and belief in the excellence of students of Milwaukee.
