About the Event
“The Right to Read” shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.”
On Saturday, February 22, 2025, the NAACP Dane County Education Committee invites you and the members of your Church to a screening of the acclaimed documentary film “The Right to Read,” produced by LaVar Burton. The documentary explores the journey taken by NAACP activist, Kareem Walker to uplift the low reading scores of Black school-aged children in his hometown. Walker states that in his opinion, childhood literacy is the paramount civil rights issue of our era!

The film screening will be followed by a community conversation designed to lay the groundwork for a broad community partnership designed to pursue the civil rights granted under Brown vs. Board of Education, the 14th Amendment, and the U.S. Constitution.
This event will be the first in a series of education conversations designed to unite our community, amplify awareness of the educational experiences of Black children, and create actionable change.
We hope that your members who are engaged in the educational growth and development of our children either personally or professionally, will join us! If we don’t fight for the rights of our children, who will?
We hope that you will encourage participation as we begin this critical mission.
Sincerely,
